Rekindle
Social Media Platform for Digitised Old Photos
2024
UX Application Design
Project Overview
Scope
Design an application that enables people in their 40s to 60s to easily organise and digitise their old physical photos and share their old memories through a social media platform.
Process
Conducted user research to understand the needs and pain points of the target audience, focusing on users in their 40s to 60s. Developed user personas and mapped out their journeys to identify key touch points. Created wireframes and interactive prototypes using Figma, testing and refining the app’s features, such as photo recognition challenges, album sharing, and collage creation, through iterative user feedback.
Solution
The Rekindle app simplifies photo digitisation with clear instructions and automated cropping, reducing cognitive load. Its intuitive interface allows users to scan, manage photos, create collages, and share albums easily, while a bold design with large text and icons ensures accessibility for the target audience.
Understanding the Issue
How do middle-aged adults engage with social media?
I conducted semi-structured interviews with six participants aged 40 to 60, uncovering varying social media habits, methods of storing photos, and levels of trust in online platforms.
PAIN POINTS:
Mid-to-late 50s participants distrusted online platforms due to privacy and AI concerns.
Many kept sentimental items they rarely look at, but wouldn’t discard.
Photo storage methods included phone galleries, apps, Facebook albums, and hard drives.
Most preferred private sharing over public uploads, citing privacy concerns.
Defining Design Goals
What should I focus on to design the best application for my target users?
Using insights from the interviews, I established design goals tailored to the target audience's needs and preferences.
GOALS:
Simplify login and signup processes, with adjustable profile settings for privacy control.
Provide real-time assistance and community support options for users.
Create a straightforward photo capturing, captioning, and posting process with clearly organised features.
Ensure the app is user-friendly, accessible, and visually appealing, with features for communication, feedback, and inclusivity.
Brainstorming Possible Ideas
I created three paper prototype concepts with the design goals in mind and tested them with participants.
CONCEPTS:
Concept 1 offers a familiar grid structure with a minimal interface and guided navigation for clarity and ease.
Concept 2 simplifies navigation by consolidating functions on the homepage and reducing steps to enhance user control.
Concept 3 features bold design with large sections, concise titles, minimal icons, and clear calls to action for better usability.
