Grocer Guide
Grocery Hunting - Gamified Application Design

Lead Designer
Project Overview
Scope
The goal of this project was to design a gamified mobile application to encourage users to explore local grocery stores across Melbourne.
Process
I researched, analysed, and gathered insights through primary research, user interviews, and focus groups. I ideated, sketched, and created high-fidelity designs to best reflect the concept. Using Figma, I implemented a interactive prototype, and iterated designs through user testing.
Solution
Grocerguide aims to boost foot traffic to local stores, supporting smaller businesses in competing with larger chains while encouraging users to explore diverse cuisines and discover new grocery stores. Through gamified, interactive features, the app engages users with location-specific challenges, guiding them to grocery stores based on cuisine or preferences. Once at the store, users select a recipe challenge, use AR scanning to locate ingredients and earn points, then follow a recipe guide to cook at home. A social board allows users to share their culinary creations, fostering community connections and a shared love for local flavours.
Understanding the Issue
Through primary research techniques and on-site research, I identified these 3 key points:
Small local businesses struggle to compete with online shopping and large retail chains.
An abundance of local grocery stores are only known to their community and are hidden to others.
These grocery stores are a unique part of Melbourne's cultural heritage, reflecting its diverse communities.
Defining Design Goals
To better define the project, I established design goals that guided my decision-making. The goals included:
Increase foot traffic to local stores, helping smaller businesses compete against larger competitors.
Encourage users to explore different cuisines and discover new grocery stores.
Implement interactive and gamified features to keep users engaged and excited.
Brainstorming Solutions
I addressed my design goals by designing low-fidelity prototypes and refining them through user testing. The app’s functionalities include:
A selection of 10 grocery stores to explore
Features 2 recipe challenges (beginner and advanced) for each store
Uses AR technology for ingredient scanning, tracks points
Rewards users with loyalty discounts at participating stores through a point system
